Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae > Pachycarpus

Characteristics

Stem 140-330 mm tall, thinnish to stout, simple or branched from the base, puberulous to pubescent, hairs frequently bifarious. Leaves spreading; petiole 5-15 mm long; blade 30-105 x 17-43 mm, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, glabrous or puberulous above, glabrous to pubescent or scabrous below, margins scabrous and sometimes undulate. Inflorescence umbellate, 2-6-flowered, lowermost usually pedunculate, becoming sessile upwards, at upper nodes and terminal; peduncles up to 25 mm long, puberulous to pubescent. Bracts 4-10 mm long, linear, acuminate, glabrous above, pubescent below. Pedicels 10-25 mm long, pubescent. Sepals 5-16 x 3-6 mm, lanceolate, narrowly ovate, ovate or elliptic, apex acute or acuminate, glabrous above, pubescent below. Corolla 16-28 mm long, spreading cup-shaped, lobed almost to the base, apparently greenish-yellow and mottled with brown or purple spots, glabrous above, pubescent below; lobes 13-25 x 9-17 mm, oblong, elliptic or ovate, tips acute to obtuse, often notched and slightly recurved, margins revolute and imbricate below, rarely ciliate, surfaces glabrous or occasionally puberulous to pubescent below. Corona lobes 11-14 mm long, spreading horizontally and then upcurved and erect, basal part linear and claw-like, 3-9 mm long, 1.5-3.5 mm broad, occasionally slightly dilated and suborbicular towards the staminal column, the linear base then dilated to form a flat lanceolate, ovate, elliptic or subhastate-lanceolate and obtuse blade 8-21 x 5-9 mm, two contiguous keels at base of each lobe 1-2 mm high, not reaching base of anthers, apex emarginate or truncate then descending sharply to form a narrow groove along the upper face of the linear base of the lobe, keels and groove 2-5 mm long, with minute papillae in the groove; basal part of upper face of blade lemon yellow. Anther wings 2.2-5.5 mm long, vertical to slightly oblique, margin straight with the basal angles diverging and curved upwards; appendages 1.0-2.4 mm long, ovate, acute or obtuse, indexed over style apex.
