Characteristics

Stem 180-420 mm tall, thinnish to stout, branched or unbranched, often many stems from one rootstock, pubescent to tomentose. Leaves ascending-spreading; petiole 3-10 mm long; blade 35-89 x 6-30 mm, linear or lanceolate to narrowly ovate or oblong, margin undulate, pubescent or subtomentose, surfaces pubescent, often less so above. Inflorescence umbellate, 2-5-flowered, sessile and pedunculate, lateral at upper nodes and terminal; peduncles up to 25 mm long, densely pubescent. Bracts 8-19 mm long, linear, acuminate, glabrous above, pubescent below, deciduous. Pedicels 8-20 mm long, densely pubescent. Sepals 10-27 mm long, linear, lanceolate or narrowly ovate, acute-acuminate, to acuminate or acuminate-attenuate, glabrous above, densely pubescent below. Corolla 12-26 mm long, `globose-campanulate', lobed almost to the base, `apparently whitish or pale greenish, stained with dull purple on the back', surfaces glabrous or rarely puberulous below; lobes 10-21 x 8-13 mm, ovate or elliptic to suborbicular, recurved tips acute or obtuse, often slightly notched. Corona lobes 9-18 mm long, spreading horizontally at the linear or claw-like basal part which bears 2 erect wing-like keels, 5.0-8.0 mm long, 1.7-5.5 mm broad at the base, contiguous, subfalcate or falcate with acute or obtuse tips pointing outwards, apparently dark purple and white; beyond the keels the lobe becomes erect and dilates into a 3-lobed concave blade, lateral lobes of blade 2.0-5.4 mm long, horizontally spreading or inwardly directed, varying from broadly deltoid to linear-deltoid, tips obtuse, middle lobes 2.4-6.0 mm long, linear-deltoid or linear-oblong, tips obtuse or rarely bifid, erect or curved slightly inwards, dilated apical part rarely subrhomboid and not 3-lobed. Anther appendages 1.5-3.0 mm long, ovate or elliptic to broadly ovate or suborbicular, obtuse, inflexed over style apex; wings 2.3-3.5 mm long, vertical, outer edge straight. Follicle 90-130 x 25 mm, narrowly ovoid, obtuse, 6-winged, wings coarsely toothed or subentire.
