Characteristics

Tree to 9 (–13) m high, sometimes stoloniferous; prop roots usually absent; trunk with ascending appressed rootlets. Leaves erect to ascending, (1–) 1.5–2 (–2.5) m long, 6–8 cm wide, glaucous or not; margins usually with prickles in lower half, prickly or not in upper half or sometimes with prickles only at apex; midrib usually not prickly in lower half, sometimes with prickles in upper half or near apex only. Males flowers not seen. Fruiting head broadly ovoid to subglobose, (13–) 16–22 cm long, usually with 45–55 phalanges, yellowish orange to red when ripe. Phalanges usually with 9–13 carpels, broadly obovoid, 5–7-angled, 4.5–5.5 (–6.5) cm long, (3–) 4–5 (–6) cm wide, usually ± convex at apex; sides smooth to punctate or verrucose; lateral sutures interlocking between phalanges. Carpel apices pyramidal to rounded, often angular, 2–6 (–10) mm high, sometimes flattened or shallowly concave at apex; stigma oblique to almost vertical.

A small tree. It grows 6-10 m tall. The leaves are in tufts and stiff and thorny. They are 1.3-1.8 m long and triangle shaped with sharp spines along the edge. They are in crowded spirals along the branch ends. It can have aerial roots. The flowers are cream in a large spike at the end of the branch. Male and female flowers are in separate plants. The fruit are large and 20-30 cm across. These are made up of several wedge shaped fruit. They are orange-red when ripe.
