Characteristics

Tree to 12 m high; prop roots to c. 50 cm up trunk; stem and prop roots with sparse prickly nodules. Axial buds producing plantlets below leaves. Leaves arching to drooping, 1.5–3 (–4) m long, to 6 cm wide, sometimes glaucous; margins with prickles throughout, denser towards apex; midrib with prickles in upper half, absent at base and usually also below middle. Male flowers: stemonophores with numerous (30–42) stamens; anthers 3.5–4 mm long. Fruiting head solitary, pendulous, ovoid–globose, to c. 25 cm long, with 40–50 phalanges, pink to red. Phalanges with (9–) 12–17 carpels, obovoid to broadly so, usually laterally compressed, irregularly 4–6-angled, 3.5–5 cm long, 3–4.5 cm across, truncate; sides smooth, shiny when fresh, without visible sutures. Carpel apices crowded towards centre of phalange, acute-conical, 3–5 mm high; stigma vertical below ± hooded tip of carpel.
