Characteristics

Tree 10–14 m high; prop roots present; prop roots and trunk with sharp conical nodules. Leaves ± erect, to 1.6 m long, 7–9 cm wide, slightly glaucous below; margins usually with prickles from near base to apex; midrib usually with prickles in upper half. Male flowers: stemonophore with c. 28–34 stamens; anthers 2.5–3 mm long. Fruiting head solitary, pendulous, cylindric to obloid, 18–25 cm long, 11–13 cm diam., with c. 70–100 phalanges, orange-red. Phalanges of 5–9 (–12) carpels, angularly obovoid, 4–6-angled, 4.5–5.5 cm long, (2–) 3–3.5 (–4.5) cm wide, ± truncate to very shallowly convex at apex, smooth on sides with sutures usually not visible below apex. Carpel apices ± flat to very low pyramidal, to 3 mm high; stigma oblique to inclined.
