Characteristics

Tree to 6 m high; prop roots absent; trunk ± smooth. Leaves erect to pendulous, 1.3–1.4 m long, to 6.3 cm wide, not glaucous; margins with prickles throughout, sometimes absent on attenuate apex; midrib with prickles becoming sparser and finally absent towards apex. Male inflorescence not known. Fruiting head unbranched; pendulous, globular, c. 18 cm diam., orange. Drupes mostly solitary, occasionally connate in pairs or rarely in threes, cuneiform, 6.7–8 × 1.5–2.5 cm, irregularly 4–7-angled, acutely pyramidal to rounded; stigma apical, oblique.
