Tufted, hispid annual to 600 mm high, erect or geniculate. Leaf blade to 100 x to 7 mm. Inflorescence obovate, base usually enclosed by uppermost leaf, branches usually short, rigid, ascending; densely scabrid just below point of attachment of spikelets, prickles 0.10-0.15 mm long; spikelets spreading and distant from one another. Spikelet 2.0-2.5 mm long; lower glume and lower lemma apex often tinged purple; lower glume 1/2-2/3 length of spikelet, 5-7-nerved; upper glume (7-)9-nerved; lower floret sterile, lemma (7-)9-nerved, palea reduced, much shorter than lower lemma; upper lemma pale to dark, shiny.
Spikelets 2–2.5 mm. long, ovate, glabrous, apiculate; inferior glume 1/2 the length of the spikelet, broadly ovate, 5–7-nerved; superior glume as long as the spikelet, 9-nerved; inferior lemma similar to the superior glume, sterile, its palea poorly developed; superior lemma and palea dark, glossy.
Panicle 4–13 cm. long, ovate, moderately to much branched, usually scarcely exserted from the uppermost leaf-sheath.
Leaf laminae 5–15 cm. long and 5–15 mm. wide, linear or linear-lanceolate, acute.
Hispid annual with geniculately ascending, branching culms 15–40 cm. high.
