Spikelets ovate-oblong, 2.2–2.8 mm. long, glabrous, often orange in colour and purple tinged, acute; lower glume cuff-like, 1/3–1/2 the length of the spikelet, (1–)3-nerved, acute; upper glume broadly ovate, 7-nerved, acute; lower lemma broadly ovate, 7-nerved, sterile, its palea absent; upper lemma dark and glossy.
