Perennial; culms 25-80 cm. high, erect, in small tufts, rather coarse, papillose-hispid with ascending or spreading hairs; sheaths papillose-hispid, mostly longer than the internodes; ligule membranaceous, ciliate, about 1 mm. long; blades mostly 15-30 cm. long, rarely as much as 60 cm., 4-10 mm. wide, rather thin, sparsely to densely papillose-hispid; panicles 15-30 cm. long, the branches stiffly ascending, naked in the lower half; spikelets 3 mm. long, lanceolate, glabrous, the first glume acute, about half as long as the spikelet; fruit 2 mm. long.
