Perennial; culms erect or decumbent at the base and rooting at the lower nodes, 25-60 cm. or sometimes as much as 1 m. long, branching, the nodes glabrous; sheaths longer than the internodes, the margins papillose-ciliate at least toward the summit; ligule wanting; blades 5-20 cm. long, 6-10 mm. wide (rarely as much as 15 mm.), widest at the cordate base, glabrous on the lower surface, sparsely hispid on the upper, the margins scabrous; panicles erect, 5-15 cm. long, the branches simple, 1-4 cm. long, usually stiffly and abruptly spreading, the rachis papillose-hispid, the hairs sometimes sparse; spikelets 1.3-1.5 mm. long, crowded.
