Leaves widely spaced in the lower part of the culm and conspicuously distichous, becoming densely packed towards the apex; sheaths, especially the lower ones, chartaceous and shiny; lower blades 2.5–8 cm. long, 2–6 mm. wide, straight at the base, flat or inrolled, glabrous, pungent, upper blades subulate, 1–4 cm. long, straight, rarely recurved or deflexed.. Panicle ovate, 1–2 cm. long, moderately to sparsely branched, scarcely exserted from the uppermost leaf-sheath.. Spikelets globose, 1.8–2 mm. long; lower glume broadly ovate, 1/2 the length of the spikelet, 0–1-nerved; upper glume 5-nerved; lower lemma 5-nerved, male, its palea well developed; upper lemma pale, shining.
