Branchlets having the inter-nodes very variable in length, pubescent at first, later glabrescent.. Leaves crowded  at the tips of the branchlets, interspersed with bract-like scales; stipules narrowly linear-lanceolate, 5–7 mm. long, pubescent; petioles 2–8 mm. long; stipels setaceous, 3–4 mm. long, glabrous; blade oblanceolate, 4–10.5(–18) cm. long, 1.5–5(–9) cm. wide, obtuse, narrowly rounded or shallowly subcordate, shallowly glandular-serrate or-crenate-serrate, glands red, chartaceous, lateral nerves 10–14 on each side of the midrib, scarcely prominent above, slightly prominent beneath, glabrous or subglabrous above, pubescent on the midrib and lateral nerves and with tufts of hairs in the axils of the lateral nerves beneath.. Female flowers: pedicels 2–3 cm. long, articulate, geniculate at the joint, glabrous or sparingly pubescent towards the top; sepals in the fruiting stage broadly elliptic or elliptic-ovate, 2–6 mm. long, 1–4 mm. wide, obtuse, entire, strongly triplinerved, glabrous or subglabrous; staminodes minute; disc thin, 1.5 mm. diameter; ovary-size not known; styles 1 mm. long, pubescent at the base, glabrous distally.. Fruit 0.5–0.6 cm. long, 1 cm. diameter, minutely and shallowly tuberculate, sparingly or evenly pubescent, bluish grey.. Seeds 4 mm. diameter, smooth, purplish brown, slightly mottled.. Fig. 43.
