Characteristics

Small or medium-sized dioecious tree with a simple indumentum. Leaves alternate, clustered at the ends of the shoots, shortly petiolate, stipulate, stipellate, elobate, shallowly glandular-serrate or-crenate-serrate, penninerved. Inflorescences racemose or subpaniculate, axillary in the axils of leaves or scales, solitary, ± lax. Male flowers 1–5 per bract, on articulate pedicels; calyx closed in bud, later valvately 3–5-partite, the sepals reflexed; petals 0; disc-glands numerous, disposed amongst the stamens; stamens 25–40, filaments free, the anthers dorsifixed, introrse, shortly apiculate, the thecae pendulous, longitudinally dehiscent; pistillode 0; receptacle hemispherical. Female flowers 1 per bract, long pedicellate; sepals 5–7, imbricate, very unequal, accrescent; petals 0; staminodes 8–10; disc annular; ovary 3-locular, with 1 ovule per locule; styles 3, slightly connate at the base, bifid, stigmas papillose. Fruit trilobate, dehiscing septicidally into 3 bivalved cocci leaving a small persistent columella; endocarp thinly woody. Seeds globose, ecarunculate.
