Characteristics

Leaf-lamina (3)6–10(13) × (1·5)2·5–5·7(7·5) cm., elliptic-lanceolate to ovate, shortly and broadly acute to acuminate, margin denticulate-glandular, the teeth acute, 1–2 mm. deep and 2–5 mm. distant, widely attenuate to rounded at the base, coriaceous, initially softly tawny-tomentose on both faces, glabrescent above with maturity, the midrib, the 5–8 pairs of arched lateral nerves and the vein reticulation prominent mainly on the lower surface; petiole thick, (3)5–7 mm. long.

Flowers in fascicles of 1–3 (rarely 5), axillary, subsessile or with pedicel up to 5 mm. long, the pedicels tawny-tomentose; bracts c. 2 mm. long, ovate.
Rhizomatous many-stemmed undershrub up to 1 m. high or shrub up to 4 m. high with a trunk up to 5 cm. in diameter; young branches tawny-tomentose.
Corona c. 3 mm. high, with the laciniae arranged in 5 ± distinct bundles connate at the base, tomentose towards the apex and glabrous below.
A shrub. It grows 1 m tall. The fruit is small, velvety and yellow-green. They are egg shaped with 6-8 seeds in an orange pulp.
Sepals 10–12 × (3)4–5 mm., oblong, greenish-white, tawny-tomentose outside, minutely tomentose inside.
Stamens with glabrous filaments c. 5 mm. long and oblong-cordate anthers c. 2 mm. long.
Seeds c. 8 × 4 mm., ovoid, rather compressed, brown with a gelatinous orange aril.
Capsule 1·5–2 ×1·2–1·8 cm., ovoid-subglobose, rusty-tomentose, 6–7-seeded.
Petals oblong, white, puberulous outside, narrower than the sepals.
Ovary sessile, rusty-tomentose; styles c. 1 mm. long.
