Perennial, with creeping or floating spongy rhizomes; culms 30–60 cm. high, prostrate and rooting at the nodes below.. Leaf-blades 3–20 cm. long, 4–12 mm. wide, flat or folded, broadly obtuse to bluntly acute.. Inflorescence 10–30 cm. long; racemes 1–3 cm. long, their rhachis winged and 1–3 mm. wide.. Spikelet narrowly ovate, 3–4 mm. long; lower glume truncate, 1/8–1/4 the length of the spikelet; upper glume 1/3–1/2 the length of the spikelet; lower floret with a palea, its lemma as long as the spikelet; upper lemma granulose.
Perennial, hydrophyte and rhizomatous (rhizome floating and spongy) or stoloniferous (culms prostrate and rooting at nodes), up to 0.6 m high. Leaf blades 30-200 mm long, 4-12 mm wide, bluntly acute to broadly obtuse, often notched at rounded apex and splitting along midrib. Spikelets 3.0-3.5 mm long, acute and narrowly ovate. Central axis of inflorescence broadly winged and ribbon-like, 3-5 mm wide.
Like P. geminatum but leaf laminae broadly obtuse to acute, spikelets 3–4 mm. long and glumes shorter, the superior up to 1/2 length of spikelet.
