Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Paspalum

Characteristics

Perennial; culms densely tufted, 0.3 to more than 2 m. high, coarse, leafy, erect or ascending, sometimes decumbent at the base and rooting at the lower nodes, finally branching, the nodes glabrous to conspicuously bearded with stiff ascend-ing hairs; sheaths mostly longer than the internodes, keeled, papillose-hispid, some-times only on the collar and along the mar-gins, colored orange-brown on the inner surface; ligule 1-3 mm. long; blades 9-50 cm. long, 6-25 mm. wide, usually rounded at the base, densely hispid on both surfaces to nearly glabrous, with a tuft of long hairs on each side at the base, the margins scabrous, more or less hispid-ciliate; inflorescence 5-30 cm. long, composed of 7-60 approximate, solitary or somewhat fascicled racemes, the lower ones 4-12 cm. long, ascending or arcuate-spreading; spikelets paired, 1.3-1.5 mm. long, densely crowded, the glume and sterile lemma equal, barely covering the fruit, softly pubescent, the sterile lemma woolly pubescent only on the margins; fruit about as large as the spikelet, smooth and shining.
More
Perennial, forming coarse tussocks. Culms erect or geniculately ascending, 30–120 cm tall, nodes pubescent. Leaf sheaths often hispid; leaf blades linear-lanceolate, flat, 9–50 × 0.6–2.5 cm, scabrid or hispid, margins usually undulate, apex acuminate; ligule 0.2–0.5 mm. Inflorescence axis 5–20 cm; racemes 7–60, fascicled, 4–12 cm, ascending or spreading; spikelets paired; rachis ca. 0.5 mm wide. Spikelets brown at maturity, orbicular or obovate, 1–1.5 mm; upper glume membranous, subequaling spikelet, 3-veined, pubescent; lower lemma resembling upper glume, subglabrous on central portion of back; upper lemma as long as spikelet, pallid at maturity.
Perennial, forming coarse clumps; culms 30–215 cm. high.. Leaf-blades 9–50 cm. long, 6–25 mm. wide.. Inflorescence composed of 7–60 racemes fascicled on a common axis 5–20(–30) cm. long, each raceme 4–12 cm. long, the spikelets paired in 4 rows on a narrow rhachis ± 0.5 mm. wide.. Spikelets subhemispheric, 1.3–1.4 mm. long, dark brown; upper glume and lower lemma barely as long as the spikelet, minutely pubescent; upper lemma finely striate, pallid at maturity.
Caespitose perennial up to 1·2 m. high.
