Characteristics

Annual herb with simple or branched subsucculent stem. Leaves petiolate, entire or coarsely dentate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils, with nectarial glands at the base of the pedicels. Calyx small. Corolla-tube subcylindric or narrowly funnel-shaped; limb spreading subequally 5-lobed. Stamens included; staminode often present; anthers large, divergent, kidney-shaped. Ovary 2-celled, cells undivided; 2 ovules in each cell; disc small, inconspicuous. Fruit indehiscent, subpyramidal, 4-angled, rounded to acute at the apex with a spreading spine at each basal angle, and then abruptly contracted into a narrow collar below. Seeds 1–2 in each cell.
