Fruit indehiscent, subpyramidal, 4-angled, rounded to acute at the apex and with a spreading spine at each basal angle, then abruptly contracted into a narrow collar below (TAB. 27 fig. 10); mesocarp spongy.
Corolla tube subcylindrical or narrowly funnel-shaped; limb spreading, subequally 5-lobed.
Leaves petiolate, oblong to obovate, entire or coarsely dentate, subsucculent.
Stamens included; thecae divergent; staminodium present or absent.
Ovary bilocular, undivided, each loculus with 2 pendulous ovules.
Erect or ascending annual herb, stems simple or branched.
Flowers solitary in the leaf axils.
Seeds 1–2 in each loculus.
