A shrub or small tree. It grows 10 m high. The leaves are dark green and shiny. They are alternate and sword shaped and 3-12 cm long. The flowers are in a group of 3-10. They are green. The fruit is an oval berry 10-14 mm long. They are purple to black.
Leaves with petioles 2–6 mm long; lamina (30)60–165 × (10)20–50(62) mm, lanceolate, oblanceolate or elliptic, cuneate or obtuse at the base, obtuse to acute at the apex, membranous to coriaceous; midrib prominent beneath.
Ovary densely hairy at summit, 1.5–3 mm long; disk 0.3–1.5 mm long, sometimes minute or missing, undulate or irregularly lobed, sparsely or densely ciliate at top; style 1.5–4 mm long.
Calyx tube 6–14 mm long, attenuated, sometimes rounded at the base, glabrous; lobes 1–2.5 × 1–2 mm, ovate, sparsely pubescent at the apex.
Inflorescence 5–22-flowered, umbellate; peduncle 10–40 mm long; bracts 4–10 mm long, lanceolate to ovate, ciliate, caducous.
Stamens of the upper whorl included or slightly exserted; anthers c. 1 mm long, sessile or subsessile.
Flowers cream or yellowish-green, pale brown when old; pedicel 4–18 mm long, glabrous.
Slender stemmed shrub up to 4 m or small, much branched tree 3–6(10) m tall.
Fruit 7–15 mm × 5–10 mm, ovoid, reddish at maturity, hairy at top.
Branches glabrous; bark greyish or brownish, sometimes striated.
