Characteristics

Densely tufted perennial from a short rhizome; culms 15–60 cm. high, erect, 1–2-noded.. Leaf-blades narrowly linear to setaceous, 5–25 cm. long and up to 4 mm. wide when opened out, rigid, curved or flexuous, glabrous or pubescent, usually glandular on the margins, with a slender blunt tip; lower leaf-sheaths glabrous to villous, usually ± coriaceous at the base.. Panicle ovate to oblong, 4–12 cm. long, usually loose; rhachis and branches nearly always bearing minute elliptic or circular glands; branches capillary, spreading or sometimes ascending.. Spikelets (3.5–)4–6(–7) mm. long; glumes purple below the middle, pale above; body of lemma 1.8–2.5 mm. long, pubescent, the lobes 0.3–0.6 mm. long, acute, each with a fine bristle 1.5–7 mm. long; awn 4–8 mm. long, the column 2–4 mm. long and tightly twisted; palea 2–4 mm. long; anthers 0.9–2.5 mm. long.
