Annual; culms 10-40 cm. high, erect or decumbent at the base, branching, especially at the lower nodes; sheaths much longer than the internodes, scabrous, auriculate, the auricles pubescent; ligule very short, truncate; blades 5-20 cm. long, 2-4 mm. wide, gradually tapering to a usually long, petiole-like base, scaberulous; panicles 3-12 cm., rarely 15 cm., long, narrow, dense, interrupted, the short branches usually appressed; lemma 1.5 mm. long, scabrous, the very fine flexuous awn about 2 cm. long.
