Characteristics

Stem solitary, 1-2 1/2 ft. high, simple, more or less unifariously or bifariously puberulous at the upper part, glabrous below; leaves erect to spreading, 1 3/4-5 in. long, 1/2-1 1/2 lin. broad, linear, acute, with revolute margins, glabrous on both sides or the midrib puberulous beneath; umbels 2-5, racemosely arranged, pedunculate, dense, globose, about 3/4 in. in diam., many-flowered; bracts 1 1/2-2 lin. long, subulate, slightly puberulous; pedicels 1/2-3/4 lin. long, puberulous; sepals 2 lin. long, 3/4-1 lin. broad, lanceolate, acute, puberulous with somewhat tortuous hairs; corolla-lobes erect or but slightly spreading, about 3 lin. long, 1 1/4-1 1/3 lin. broad, linear-oblong, somewhat abruptly acute, glabrous on both sides; corona-lobes arising at the base of the staminal column and slightly overtopping it, 1 3/4-2 1/4 lin. long, erect, stalked, with the blade about as long as the linear stalk, 1-1 1/2 lin. broad, broadly sagittate-ovate, obtuse, with 2 prominent contiguous keels on the inner face, which are capped at their apex by a transverse keel or flap across the thickened top of the lobes; alternating filaments at the base of the lobes 2/3-1 3/4 lin. long, filiform, often resting in the channel on the back of the anthers; staminal column 1 1/2 lin. long, subglobose; anther-cells slightly inflated, much curved on the back; anther-appendages rather narrow, oblong-lanceolate, subobtuse, horizontally inflexed on the small style-apex from the triangularly thickened truncate apex of the connective; pollen-masses semicircularly curved, subterete at the attached opaque end, thin, flat, translucent and truncate at the free end, attached by very long stout doubly curved or S-like caudicles to a very minute black pollen-carrier.

Flowers: pedicels up to 12-30 mm; corolla erect to suberect, lobes glabrous, margins revolute, dorsal surface green sometimes with maroon venation, ventral surface cream-coloured; corona white and purple-tipped, dorsal lobes sagittate-ovate, 3.6-4.8 x 2.1-3.2 mm (stalk and head of equal length), apex with horizontal protruding ridge fitting into cavity formed by anther appendage, inner lobes filiform, 1.5-4.0 mm long. Pollinia ± 1/3 length of translator’s arm; translator arms thin and twisted, wishbone-like in shape. Flowering time Oct.-Mar., with a peak in Jan., Feb. Fruit a follicle.
