Characteristics

Annuals. Flowering culms 15–40 cm high. Leaves patent, distichous at short intervals; blade flat to involute (infolded), 1.7–3.5 cm long, 1.7–4.2 mm wide, stiff, with margins bristly at base for up to 5 mm, scabrous above. Inflorescences 12–29 cm long. Spikelets close together to well separated, patent or occasionally reflexed at maturity. Callus obconical, slightly flattened, 0.7–1.5 mm long. Glumes 6–11 mm long, (31–60 mm including awn), smooth, with midnerve scaberulous; awns pilose with hairs up to 1 mm long, soft, usually spirally twisted along the infolded margins and silvery. Caryopsis subterete to biconvex (flattened).
