Characteristics

Dioecious shrubs. Adult and juvenile leaves similar. Adult leaves spirally arranged (sometimes apparently in 4 or 5 rows), but not opposite or decussate, keeled, less than 4 mm long, functional, if scale-like then imbricate and obtuse, or, if awl-like then spreading and acute. Male and female cones solitary, terminal on normal vegetative shoots. Female cones globular, comprising 3-8 fertile scales, not fleshy at maturity; ovules erect. Seeds erect at maturity; epimatium absent.
