Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Philippia

Characteristics

Calyx infundibuliform, ciliate at the margins, otherwise glabrous, all the lobes leaf–like at the tips; the 3 equal lobes triangular, acute, usually exceeding the sinus between the corolla lobes, 1·3–2·2 mm. long, fused for about 4 their length; the 4th lobe usually slightly longer, sometimes considerably longer and exceeding the corolla.
More
Leaves in whorls of 3, ascending and often slightly curved outwards, linear to narrowly ovate, obtuse, with glands and minute hairs on the apparent margins, otherwise glabrous, 1·0–5·0 mm. long, 0·35–0·8 mm. wide; petioles c. 0·5 mm. long, very shortly ciliate on the margins.
Ovary 4–locular, glabrous; style with a broadly conical distal expansion somewhat depressed at the apex, shortly exserted in flower, more strongly exserted beyond the persistent corolla in fruit, 1·2–1·6 mm. long, 0·8–1·1 mm. in diameter at the apex.
Branchlets with a dense pubescence of very short, simple hairs, often too short to be visible with a hand lens; infrafoliar ridges present.
Corolla campanulate, yellowish green suffused crimson, 1·6–2·4 mm. long, lobes broadly rounded, sinuses narrowly rounded.
Flowers in clusters of normally only 3, sometimes 6, atthetipsofthebranchlets.
Calyx and corolla normally 4–partite, occasionally 3–partite in some flowers.
Stamens 8, equalling the corolla, becoming free shortly after anthesis.
Pedicels glabrous, expanded above, 1·5–2·5 mm. long.
A shrub or tree 0·2–5 m. tall.
