Characteristics

Robust, rhizomatous herbs with fibrous roots. Leaves fleshy, many-nerved, glabrous or sparsely woolly. Scapes 1 to several. Inflorescence simple or sparsely-branched, with spikes of 10-25 flowers; flowers axillary in sheathing bracteoles. Perianth lemon-yellow, hairy; outer tepals free, broadly ovate, acute; inner tepals ±adnate to base of staminal filament, spathulate-acute, often irregularly lobed. Anther extrorse, apparently not versatile; locules cochleate; pollen grains in tetrads. Ovary ellipsoidal, imperfectly trilocular with deeply intrusive placentation, densely hairy; style straight; stigma bluntly trilobed. Fruit an oblong-ellipsoidal capsule. Seeds ovoid, spirally striate-tuberculate, with corona.
