Characteristics

Perennial caespitose herb, caudex short. Leaves densely rosulate, isolateral mo no facial, glabrous, thick and of soft texture, 40-80 cm long incl. the sheath; sheath 14-30 by 1-1½ cm and 2-4 mm thick. Scape 1 m high or more, slender, terete, gla-brate below, villous towards the woolly inflor., with few cauline leaves gradually passing into the alternate bracts. Inflorescences a terminal spike, simple or paniculate. Bracts ovate, clasping, abruptly acu-minate and subulate, 2-7 by ¾-1 cm enclosing the buds, reflexed in anthesis, again embracing the fruit. Flowers sessile, yellow. Perianth thin, outer tepals 12-15 by up to 10 mm, acute, ∞-nerved, long-villous outside, margins inflexed, the posterior with 2 stronger veins and bidentate; inner petals united below 1-2 mm with the filaments, 8 by 2 mm 3-nerved, spathulate, base hairy outside. Stamen 8-9 mm, glabrous; anther ± spherical, 1½ mm across. Ovary 6-7 by 2-3 mm, densely long-woolly; style3-4mm, glabrous; stigma broad-triangular long-papillose. Capsule triangular-oblong, 9-10 by 4-5 mm. Seeds ∞, dark-reddish, bulb-shaped, 0.8-0.9 by 0.3-0.4 mm.

Herbs tufted. Basal leaves 12--25, 30--80 cm including sheath 1--1.5 cm × 2--3.5 mm; leaf blade soft, veins 7--9, apex tapering. Cauline leaves usually 2 or 3. Flowering stem scapose, slender, terete, glabrescent proximally, villous toward inflorescence. Spikes simple, sometimes branched, woolly; bracts ovate, 2--7 × 0.7--1 cm, abaxially woolly, apex abruptly acuminate and subulate. Outer 2 perianth segments subovate, 8--10 mm, abaxially woolly, base with 2 strong veins, margin undulate, apex acute; inner 2 segments smaller than outer 2, spatulate, membranous, veins 3, base adnate to filament for 1--2 mm, apex acute. Stamen 6--9 mm, glabrous; filament flattened; anther subglobose. Ovary 6--7 mm, densely long woolly. Style 3--4 mm, glabrous; stigma dark reddish, capitate, 0.7--0.9 mm, long papillose. Fl. Jun--Jul, fr. Sep--Oct.
Leaves linear, long-acuminate, to 60 cm long, 1.5 cm wide. Scapes terete, leafy, to 120 cm long. Spikes to 50 cm long, usually densely white-woolly; bracteoles ovate-acuminate, reflexed during anthesis, to 30 mm long. Outer tepals 10–15 mm long, c. 10 mm wide; inner tepals c. 8 mm long, 2–3 mm wide. Stamen to 9 mm long; anther c. 1.5 mm diam. Ovary 3–4 mm long; style 3–5 mm long. Capsule c. 10 mm long, ± hairy. Seeds c. 1 mm long, dark reddish brown.
