Characteristics

Plants tufted, shortly rhizomatous. Leaves basal, sometimes equitant, linear, terete or flattened, sheathing at base, glabrous, ciliate-margined or sparsely to very densely strigose on surfaces. Inflorescence a cymosely branched panicle; scape bracteate. Flowers actinomorphic. Perianth glabrous, white or cream. Sepals 3, free, petaloid. Petals 3, free, equal to sepals. Stamens 6; filaments inserted at base of perianth; anthers basifixed; connective broad, flat, sometimes exceeding locules; dehiscence semi-introrse. Ovary inferior; ovule 1 per locule; style longer than stamens, simple with a single terminal minute capitate stigma or trifid near tip with 3 stigmas. Fruit 1-seeded.
