Inflorescence as described for the tribe; axillary inflorescences all female; racemes short, usually not more than 1-2; spikelets longer than the ones of the terminal inflorescences, with the elongated stigmas protruding from the subtending leaf-sheaths, the terminal one hermaphrodite; the lowermost spikelet of each raceme female, the following male, sometimes reduced spikelets present; rhachilla not extended.
Female spikelets: inferior glume subulate or even setaceous; the superior narrowly ovate to oblong, up to 1/2 the length of the spikelet, 5-9-nerved; lemma of the inferior floret embracing the superior floret, dorsally with a longitudinal furrow, rather rigid, many-nerved; lemma of the superior floret 11-many-nerved, membranous to thinly coriaceous, its palea 8-12-nerved.
Male spikelets; inferior glume rather narrow, almost subulate, acute; the superior 1-nerved, ovate-oblong, up to 2/3 the length of the spikelet; lemma of the inferior floret 3-nerved, coriaceous; lemma of the superior floret 5-7-nerved, thinly coriaceous, keeled, its palea 2-nerved; stamens 6.
Caryopsis free, elliptic-oblong in outline, with a rather shallow longitudinal furrow; embryo minute; hilum linear, almost as long as the caryopsis.
Perennial grasses, sometimes of shrubby habit, with branched slender culms.
Ligule small, ciliate.
