Characteristics

Slender perennial herb, 25–65 cm., with a usually narrow subtuberous vertical root, rarely thicker.. Stem terete, glabrous or ± pilose at least in the lower internodes, striate, moderately branched.. Basal leaves usually ± bipinnate, rarely simply pinnate, oblong to deltoid in outline, 4.5–14 × 3–12 cm.; pinnae in 2–3 pairs, the laterals subsessile to shortly petiolulate, very variable in size, roundish to elliptic, the terminal leaflet more distinctly stalked; all leaflets rather bluntly to sharply regularly serrulate, sometimes incised at the margins, mucronate, glabrous or more frequently with brownish multicellular hairs at least along the lower surface of the primary venation; petioles 2.5–21 cm., usually brownish pilose; sheaths 1.25–7 cm., striate, pilose, tapering above; median stem leaves similar or simply pinnate, more shortly petiolate, leaflets more sharply serrate; uppermost leaves rapidly reduced, more narrowly dissected, sessile on the sheaths.. Umbels of (3–)5–9 striate, glabrous rays 0.8–3.5 cm. long, all flowers fertile (?); involucre absent; partial umbels 7–16-flowered; pedicels 2–5 mm., glabrous; involucel absent; peduncles 1.5–4.5 cm.. Calyx absent.. Petals white (sometimes pink-tinged) or creamy-white, broadly oblong-elliptic, ± 1 mm., with a single oil vitta, glabrous, entire or very rarely ciliate-margined.. Ovary glabrous.. Fruit broadly ellipsoid, somewhat laterally compressed, 2–2.25 mm., blackish with green ribs when ripe, glabrous; stylopodia shortly conical, disk with a narrow, slightly undulating rim, not sloping into the body of the fruit; styles 1.25–2 mm., slender, ± deflexed or flexuose, much exceeding the stylopodia..
