Characteristics

A terrestrial herb 2–5 dm. high, glabrous except for the roots.. Tubers globose to ellipsoid or narrowly ovoid, 7–20 mm. long, 5–10 mm. in diameter, ± tomentose.. Stem erect, ± flexuous, slender, with leaves scattered along its length, ± angular.. Leaves 4–8, the lowermost often reduced to a sheath, the next 1 or 2 ± spreading or recurved, lanceolate, acute, the largest 2–6 cm. long and 3–9 mm. broad, the remainder erect and adpressed to the stem, spaced out at rather long intervals, the uppermost similar to the bracts.. Inflorescence narrow, up to 8.5 cm. long, loosely l–5(rarely –7)-flowered.. Bracts adpressed with the apices sometimes a little recurved, lanceolate, acute, 1–2.5 cm. long, much shorter than the pedicel with ovary.. Petals erect, adherent to the dorsal sepal, obliquely triangular-lanceolate from a broad base, 5–7 mm. long, 2–3.5 mm. broad.. Lip deflexed, convex and fleshy, narrowly oblong or elliptical, sometimes broader towards the base, 5–7 mm. long, 2.5–4 mm. broad.. Spur dependent, slender towards the base, the apical half somewhat swollen, 2–3.5 cm. long.. Anther erect, with a long apiculum, 2.5–4.5 mm. high, canals porrect, attached to the sides of the rostellum, 2–3 mm. long.. Stigmas projecting forwards, thick with rounded or truncate apices, ± 2 mm. long.. Rostellum placed in front of the anther and overtopping it, ± 4 mm. high, obscurely 3-lobed about the middle, the middle lobe very acute, the side lobes very short, shoulder-like.
