Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Pleiotaxis

Characteristics

Herb 20–60 cm tall; stems erect, leafy in lower part, thickly tomentose, glabrescent.. Leaves sessile, the lower (broadly) obovate or oblong, 6–27 cm long, 4–13 cm wide, narrowing into a narrow, basally ± expanded subauriculate semi-amplexicaul somewhat sheathing base, margins dentate to coarsely dentate-serrate or crenate-serrate, apex rounded, obscurely acuminate, green, thinly araneose on both surfaces, more thickly so on margins and veins beneath; becoming smaller, oblong and relatively narrower towards the upper part of the stem, the uppermost 5–8 cm long and 1.5–2.5 cm wide.. Capitula 3–31 in narrow terminal strictly-branching racemiform thyrses, on short to elongated peduncules; involucre broadly cylindrical, dark in colour, 13–17 mm long, 5–12 mm wide; phyllaries ± 40, 6–7-seriate, broadly elliptic-oblong to narrowly oblong with the innermost narrower, rounded with dark membranous minutely fimbriate and ± erose margins, glabrescent, the longest 12.5–14 mm long.. Florets ± 20–25, white or cream; corolla 15–16.5 mm long, lobes 4–5 mm long, anthers brown.. Achenes 5–7 mm long, pilose; pappus very pale stramineous, 11–13 mm long, bristles finely toothed.. Fig. 6/3–6.
More
Leaves concolorous, chartaceous-membranous, not stem-sheathing at the base; mostly 6–27 x 3.5–10 cm., broadly elliptic to broadly oblong-obovate, rounded to obtuse at the apex, sometimes subacute-apiculate, broadly cuneate below ± narrowing into a winged petiole-like midrib 0–30 mm. long, narrowly semi-amplexicaul sometimes subauriculate at the base; margins serrate to coarsely irregularly serrate, sometimes subentire; sparsely finely araneose-lanate on both surfaces, sometimes with scattered patent hairs on the upper surface; main nerves 10–12 on each side of the midrib.
Phyllaries dark-purple sometimes stramineous, appressed imbricate, rounded obtuse, scarious-membranous, margins broadly hyaline ± torn, glabrous, from c. 2 mm. long and ovate outside, increasing to c. 19 mm. long becoming linear inside; middle phyllaries up to c. 6 mm. wide and oblong-ovate; inner phyllaries narrower.
Florets many; corollas yellowish-white, up to c. 19 mm. long with a long slender tube abruptly dilated into a short cylindric deeply-lobed limb which exceeds the pappus and involucre, glabrous; corolla lobes c. 4 mm. long, linear.
Achenes to c. 7 mm. long, subfusiform-cylindric, obscurely ribbed, densely appressed hispid; pappus of copious fine barbellate setae c. 13 mm. long.
Capitula 3–31 in a racemose to subpaniculate arrangement, 1–5 on short racemose branches from bract axils, capitula stalks stout 1–50 mm. long.
Stems annual, usually solitary, simple, ± densely leafy towards the base, leafless above, somewhat compressed-angular, araneose-lanate.
An erect often subscapose suffrutex 50–80 cm. tall, from a woody rootstock with many thong-like roots.
Involucres mostly 13–20 x 5–12 mm., hardly spreading, narrowly cylindric.
