More
Phyllaries appressed imbricate, the outer sometimes extending briefly onto the stalk, scarious-coriaceous, tomentellous to glabrescent outside, margins narrowly reddish-tinged hyaline, from c. 3 mm. long and narrowly ovate outside, increasing to c. 18 mm. long and becoming lorate-lanceolate inside; middle phyllaries up to c. 4.5 mm. wide, narrowly ovate and rounded to obtuse at the apex; inner phyllaries narrower.
Florets numerous; corollas bright-to deep-red, up to c. 18 mm. long with a long slender tube abruptly dilated into a short cylindric, deeply narrowly-lobed limb which exceeds the pappus and involucre, glabrous.
Achenes 7–8.5 mm. long, narrowly cylindric, obscurely narrowly many-ribbed, densely hispid; pappus of copious, subplumose setae, 9–12 mm. long.
Stems annual, 1-several, simple or sometimes branching above, leafy, sericeous-lanate.
An erect slender suffrutex 30–135 cm. tall, from a woody rootstock.
Capitula solitary and terminal, or 2–4 on short or long stalks.
