Characteristics

Densely tufted perennial, 150-600 mm high; rhizome oblique; old basal leaf sheaths split into fibres. Leaf blade 30-200 x 1-5 mm, expanded or folded; ligule an unfringed membrane, obtuse, up to 2 mm long. Inflorescence an ovate to pyramidal panicle, 50-150 mm long, branches solitary or binate, usually less than their own length apart; spikelets aggregated on upper 1/2 of branches. Spikelets 4-6 mm long, laterally compressed, awnless; glumes ± equal to unequal, shorter than spikelet; lower glume 1-nerved, occasionally 1 or 2 additional nerves at base; upper glume 3-nerved. Florets 3-5; lemma entire, 5-7-nerved, glabrous, rarely woolly at base, keels glabrous or occasionally scabrid; palea keels glabrous or sparsely ciliate; anther 1.5-2.5 mm long. Flowering time Sept.-May.
More
Densely tufted perennial 150-600 mm high; rhizome oblique; old basal leaf sheaths split into fibres. Leaf blade 30-200 x 1-5 mm, expanded or folded; ligule to 2 mm long, obtuse. Inflorescence ovate to pyramidal, 50-150 mm long, branches solitary or binate at a node, slender, flexuous, smooth, usually splitting into two a distance away from central axis, usually less than their own length apart; spike-lets aggregated on upper 1/2 of branches. Spikelet 4-6 mm long, 3-5-flowered; lower glume 1-nerved, occasionally 1 or 2 additional nerves at base; lemma keel and margins sparsely long hairy from base to near middle (variable in same inflorescence) or glabrous; palea keels glabrous or sparsely ciliate; anthers 1.5-2.5 mm long.
Perennial; up to 0.6 m high; rhizome oblique; or tufted. Leaf blades 30-200 x 1-5 mm; leaves firm; basal sheaths splitting into fibres. Flowers: panicle open; ovate to pyramidal; 50-150 mm long; branches solitary or binate; < their own length apart; spikelets 4-6 mm long; spikelets aggregated on upper half of branches; 3-5-flowered; lemma keels and margins sparsely long hairy from base to near middle (variable in same inflorescence) or glabrous; anthers 1.5-2.5 mm long.
Perennial, rhizomatous (rhizome oblique) or tufted, up to 0.6 m high. Leaf blades 30-200 mm long, 1-5 mm wide, old leaf sheaths splitting into fibres. Spikelets 4-6 mm long. Panicle ovate to pyramidal, 50-150 mm long, branches solitary or binate, less than their own length apart; spikelets aggregated on upper half of branches, 3-5-flowered; lemmas glabrous at base.
Panicle 5-15 cm. long, ovate or triangular to oblong-ovate in outline, erect or nodding, open or rather lax; rhachis slightly grooved, glabrous; branches solitary or paired, rather slender, flexuous, divided, bare of spikelets in the lower half, spreading or deflexed at maturity.
Glumes unequal; the inferior 2-3 mm. long, 1-nerved but occasionally with 1 or 2 short additional lateral nerves, ovate-oblong or narrowly elliptic, apex subacute; the superior 3-4 mm. long, 3-nerved, ovate to ovate-elliptic, apex subobtuse, sometimes retuse.
Leaf-laminae 2-15(18) x 0·2-0·5 cm., linear, with the apex more or less abruptly narrowed into a subobtuse cucullate point, expanded or folded around the midrib, smooth or scaberulous on the upper surface and along the margins, usually glabrous.
Rhizomatous perennial to 60 cm. Leaves linear, thick, hooded, old leaf sheaths split into fibres. Spikelets in an ovoid-pyramidal panicle, aggregated on periphery, anthers ± 1 mm long.
Culms up to 60 cm. tall, usually 2-noded, compressed below, terete above, slender, simple or rarely branched below, erect or rarely ascending from a geniculate base, smooth, glabrous.
Spikelets 4-6 mm. long, 3-5-flowered, usually crowded towards the apices of the branchlets, ovate-oblong in outline, pale-green, sometimes slightly tinged with purple.
Leaf-sheaths rather tight at first, later somewhat loose, inconspicuously keeled, smooth, glabrous, the lowermost long persistent and splitting into fibres.
Lemmas 4-4·5 mm. long, 5-nerved, broadly elliptic or ovate-oblong, apex obtuse, often slightly retuse, hyaline, dorsally pubescent or glabrous.
A densely caespitose perennial with leaves mostly crowded near the base.
Pedicels rather short, smooth or slightly scaberulous.
Paleas c. 3·5 mm. long, scabrous along the keels.
Ligules 1-3 mm. long, obtuse.
Anthers c. 2 mm. long.
