Characteristics

Shortly rhizomatous perennial forming slender tussocks; rhizome covered with broad, closely overlapping scales. Culms 25–100 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous. Young shoots extravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins free, glabrous or minutely scabrous; ligule c. 0.9 mm long, truncate, apically obscurely ciliolate, abaxially hairy; blade flat to weakly folded when fresh (inrolling on drying), 6–20 cm long, 1–4 mm wide when fresh, rather stiffly erect, adaxially glabrous or sparsely and minutely scabrous, abaxially ±smooth to densely and minutely papillose. Panicles open or contracted, 8.5–21.5 cm long. Spikelets (3.5–) 5.5–9.4 mm long, with (2–) 5–7 bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved; lower glume 2.9–3.4 mm long, with lateral nerves short; upper glume 3.4–4.3 mm long. Web sparse to well-developed, rarely absent. Lemma 3–4.3 mm long, 5-nerved, pilose to villous on midnerve and marginal nerves toward base; intercostal regions glabrous or sparsely puberulous. Anthers 2.6–2.8 mm long.
