Characteristics

Caespitose or occasionally shortly rhizomatous perennial. Culms compressed, (5–) 20–75 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous or scabrous or pubescent immediately below node. Young shoots extravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins connate at least in lower 2/3 (but soon splitting), glabrous, often purplish; ligule 0.6–1.5 mm long, obtuse to truncate, apically glabrous, abaxially glabrous to minutely puberulous; blade flat or weakly folded in vivo, 7.5–19.5 (–25) cm long, 1.5–5 mm wide, rather stiff, glabrous or scabrous. Inflorescence usually loosely contracted, 9–12 (–20) cm long. Spikelets 4–5.5 mm long, with 2–5 bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved; lower glume 1.3–2.3 mm long; upper glume 1.5–2.8 mm long. Web absent or weakly developed. Lemma (1.8–) 3.2–3.4 mm long, 5-nerved; intercostal regions puberulous (rarely glabrous) in lower half, with midvein and marginal nerves usually with longer hairs. Anthers 1.1–2.2 mm long.
