Leaves usually with distinct callus at blade-sheath junction (particularly on older leaves); basal sheaths with margins connate toward base, glabrous, pallid, often ±glossy; ligule 0.4–1.5 mm long, truncate, apically obscurely ciliolate, abaxially glabrous or scaberulous; blade involute, 3–13 cm long, 0.3–0.4 mm wide, firm, adaxially scabrous to minutely puberulous, abaxially sparsely or densely scabrous. Panicles open, 4.4–7.8 cm long. Spikelets 3.8–5.5 mm long, with 2–4 bisexual florets. Glumes broad (at least upper one as broad as adjacent lemma): lower glume 2.4–2.6 mm long, 3-nerved; upper glume 2.6–3 mm long, 1-nerved. Web absent. Lemma 3–3.4 mm long, 5-nerved, entirely glabrous or with sparse hairs on midnerve and marginal nerves toward base.
