Caespitose perennial. Culms 50 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous. Young shoots usually intravaginal. Leaves often with distinct callus at blade-sheath junction; basal sheaths with margins free, glabrous or scabrous or sometimes with sparse retrorse hairs, rarely purplish; ligule 0.6–2 (–3) mm long, truncate, apically ciliolate, abaxially pubescent; blade closely folded or involute, (7–) 10–22 (–40) cm long, 0.3–0.9 mm diam. (to 1.75 mm when flattened), ±stiff, adaxially puberulous, abaxially entirely glabrous or sparsely scabrous, rarely puberulous at base, usually bright green and shining. Panicles usually open, ±pyramidal, 8.5–12 cm long. Spikelets (3–) 4.7–6.8 mm long, with 2–5 bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 2.9–3.4 mm long, (1–) 3-nerved, with lateral nerves short; upper glume 3–3.8 mm long, 3-nerved. Web absent or developed to some degree. Lemma 3.8–4.3 (–5.5) mm long, 5-nerved, with hairs in lower half on midnerve and occasionally on marginal nerves; intercostal regions glabrous. Anthers 2.4–2.5 mm long.
