Characteristics

Caespitose and usually rhizomatous perennial. Culms 20–96 (–110) cm high; mid-culm internodes smooth, or scabrous below node. Young shoots mostly extravaginal, often enclosed by broad obtuse scales. Leaves: basal sheath margins often connate for part or all of their length, glabrous or minutely scabrous, usually strongly purplish; ligule 0.4–1.1 (–2) mm long, obtuse to truncate, apically obscurely ciliolate, abaxially pubescent; blade flat or channelled, 6.5–18.5 (–40) cm long, 2–5 mm wide, rather stiff, glabrous, scabrous on both surfaces. Panicles ±open, 5–18 cm long. Spikelets 5.1–7.7 (–10) mm long, with 2–6 (–8) bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved; lower glume 2.3–3.2 mm long; upper glume 2.8–3.4 mm long. Web usually well-developed (particularly in lower florets). Lemma 3.2–4.3 (–5) mm long, 5-nerved; nerves pubescent to villous in lower half; intercostal regions glabrous to densely puberulous, with hairs usually more prominent in upper florets. Anthers 2–2.4 (–5) mm long.
