Characteristics

Caespitose, rarely shortly stoloniferous perennial. Culms 20–42 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous or retrorsely scabrous below node, usually glaucous. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves often with distinct callus at blade-sheath junction; basal sheaths with margins free, glabrous, often purplish; ligule 0.4–0.6 mm long, truncate, apically densely ciliolate, abaxially pubescent; blade closely folded with margins sometimes overlapping, 10–11.5 cm long, 0.9 mm wide, stiff and usually sharp-pointed, commonly curved, adaxially puberulous, abaxially glabrous and smooth, glaucous. Panicles open, 8–9 cm long. Spikelets 3.8–4.7 mm long, with 3–5 bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved: lower glume 1.8–2.6 mm long, with lateral nerves short; upper glume 2.1–2.6 mm long. Web weakly developed or absent. Lemma 2.7–3 mm long, 5-nerved, sparsely to densely puberulous in lower half, with hairs longer and denser along nerves. Anthers 1.8–1.9 mm long.
