Characteristics

Caespitose perennial. Culms 5–40 (–70) cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves commonly with distinct callus at blade-sheath junction; basal sheaths with margins free, glabrous, occasionally tinged purple or red; ligule 0.2–1 mm long, obtuse or truncate, apically minutely ciliolate, abaxially hairy; blade involute, 2–6.5 cm long (to 30 cm in lowland forms), 0.3–1 mm diam., often rather stiff, adaxially scabrous to puberulous, abaxially glabrous or sparsely scabrous and somewhat shiny. Panicles contracted to open, 3.5–8 cm long. Spikelets 4.7–6.6 mm long, with 2–6 bisexual florets. Glumes (at least the upper) as broad as adjacent lemmas, 3-nerved; lower glume 2.1–3 mm long; upper glume 2.2–3.4 mm long. Web absent or weakly developed. Lemma 2.6–4.5 mm long, 5-nerved, glabrous or with hairs on midnerve and sometimes marginal nerves in lower half; intercostal regions rarely sparsely puberulous. Anthers 2–3 mm long.
