Characteristics

Robust caespitose perennial. Culms (50–) 115–150 cm high; mid-culm internodes scabrous below node, often compressed. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins free, glabrous or minutely scabrous; ligule 0.6–0.9 (–2) mm long, truncate, apically ciliolate, abaxially hairy; blade flat or channelled, (15–) 19.5–28 (–80) cm long, (3–) 6.8–7.2 (–8) mm wide, ±stiff, glabrous, scabrous on both surfaces, with prominent midrib usually bordered either side by a pale subtranslucent line. Panicles usually somewhat contracted, to 35 cm long. Spikelets 5–7.7 mm long, with 3–6 (–8) bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved; lower glume 2.1–2.8 mm long; upper glume 2.6–3.4 mm long. Web usually well-developed. Lemma ±lanceolate in profile, (2.75–) 3.4–4 mm long, 5-nerved; midnerve and lateral nerves pubescent in lower half; intercostal regions glabrous or scaberulous. Anthers 2–2.2 mm long.
