Characteristics

Caespitose perennial, sometimes with short oblique rhizomes. Culms 15–60 cm high; midculm internodes glabrous. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves commonly with distinct callus at blade-sheath junction on older leaves; basal sheaths with margins connate for their entire length but soon splitting, glabrous and often shining, rarely slightly purplish; ligule 0.2–0.3 mm long, truncate, apically ciliolate, abaxially glabrous to scaberulous; blade narrowly folded or inrolled, (5–) 7–15 (–25) cm long, 0.4–0.6 mm wide, soft to the touch, bright green or rarely somewhat grey-green, adaxially scabrous to puberulous, abaxially smooth and glabrous or rarely minutely scabrous. Panicles usually open, 5–12 cm long. Spikelets 3.5–4.5 mm long, with 3–5 bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved: lower glume 1.9–2.1 mm long, with lateral nerves short; upper glume 2.2–2.4 mm long. Web absent or weakly developed. Lemma (2–) 2.6–2.8 (–3.5) mm long, 5-nerved, puberulous in lower half, with slightly longer hairs on keel and marginal nerves. Anthers 1.4–1.6 (–2) mm long.
