Stoloniferous or shortly rhizomatous perennial. Culms 14–75 cm high, occasionally rooting at nodes above base and producing fascicles of extravaginal shoots; mid-culm internodes minutely scabrous to retrorsely puberulous, strongly compressed. Leaves scattered along culms; basal sheaths with margins connate for their entire length but splitting, becoming loose and papery, scabrous to puberulous, sometimes purplish; ligule 0.1–3.5 (–7) mm long, acute to truncate, apically glabrous or ciliolate, abaxially puberulous; blade flat, channelled, loosely inrolled or folded, 6–17.5 cm long, 1.3–3.8 mm wide, adaxially glabrous or scabrous to minutely puberulous, abaxially glabrous, shiny. Panicles contracted, 1.5–9 (–20) cm long. Spikelets 3–5.5 mm long, with 2–6 bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 1.7–3 mm long, 1–3-nerved, with lateral nerves often short; upper glume 1.9–3 mm long, 3-nerved. Web absent. Lemma 2.2–4.5 mm long, 5-nerved, puberulous in lower half or glabrous; midrib and marginal nerves sometimes sparsely pilose or rarely villous. Anthers 1.3–2 mm long.
