Characteristics

Caespitose, slender perennial. Culms 10–50 cm high; mid-culm internodes usually glabrous or scabrous. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins connate in lower half (sometimes only near base), glabrous or minutely scabrous, sometimes purplish; ligule 1–2.1 (–4.5) mm long, truncate to acute, sometimes apiculate, apically minutely ciliolate, abaxially sparsely hairy; blade folded or involute, 2–15 cm long, c. 0.4 mm wide, rather soft, adaxially glabrous or sparsely puberulous, abaxially glabrous, scabrous or shortly hispid. Panicles open to contracted, 2.5–11.5 cm long. Spikelets 1.9–3.6 (–6.4) mm long, with 2–6 bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 1.1–1.8 (–2.6) mm long, 1–3-nerved, with lateral nerves short; upper glume 1.5–2.1 (–2.8) mm long, 3-nerved. Web absent. Lemma 1.5–2.6 (–3.4) mm long, 5-nerved, occasionally glabrous but usually puberulous in lower half with nerves sometimes more pronouncedly hairy. Anthers 1.2–1.5 mm long.
