Characteristics

Densely caespitose perennial. Culms 28–85 cm high; mid-culm nodes hairy; mid-culm internodes scabrous, or scabrous and retrorse-pilose. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins variably connate, scabrous and pilose with spreading to deflexed hairs to 0.4 mm long, sometimes purple; ligule 0.4–0.9 mm long, obtuse or truncate, apically densely ciliolate, abaxially pubescent; blade loosely inrolled or involute, 5–35.5 cm long, 0.6–0.9 mm wide, usually rather soft, adaxially densely puberulous, abaxially scabrous and pilose, or pilose but with hairs of 2 or more lengths (longer hairs to 0.6 mm long). Panicles open or contracted, 4–18 cm long. Spikelets (3–) 3.8–5.5 mm long, with (2–) 4–7 bisexual florets. Glumes (2–) 2.6–3 mm long; lower glume (1–) 3-nerved, with lateral nerves short; upper glume 3-nerved. Web absent or weakly developed. Lemma 2.1–3.4 mm long, 5-nerved, generally puberulous in lower half, sometimes with longer hairs on keel and marginal nerves. Anthers 1.8–2 mm long.
