Characteristics

Caespitose perennial, often rather loosely tufted, with spreading rhizomes and short ascending stolons. Culms 30–100 cm high, mid-culm internodes glabrous or sparsely puberulous. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins connate in lower 1/3–1/2, glabrous or sparsely puberulous, occasionally purple; ligule 0.4–1.8 mm long, obtuse or truncate, apically ciliolate, abaxially hairy; blade folded or involute, 3.5–35 cm long, 0.3–0.6 mm wide, rather soft, adaxially puberulous, abaxially glabrous or puberulous. Panicles loosely contracted, 5–10.5 cm long. Spikelets 4.6–10.2 mm long, with 2–7 bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 2.6–3.8 mm long, 1–3-nerved; upper glume 3.2–4.3 mm long, 3-nerved. Web well-developed to weakly developed. Lemma (3.5–) 4.3–5.1 mm long, 5-nerved, with keel villous in lower 2/3 and marginal nerves with hairs toward base; intercostal regions glabrous or scaberulous. Anthers 2.4–2.6 mm long.
