Characteristics

Caespitose or shortly rhizomatous perennial. Culms 30–90 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous. Young shoots extravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins free, glabrous or minutely antrorsely scabrous, sometimes purplish; ligule 0.9–1.3 mm long, truncate, apically ciliolate, abaxially puberulous; blade folded to strongly inrolled-involute, 4.5–14 cm long, 0.4–1.3 mm wide (to 3 mm when flattened), rather stiff and sharp-tipped, adaxially scabrous to puberulous on veins, abaxially smooth and glabrous or scabrous on midvein. Panicles contracted or lower branches narrowly spreading, 12–25 cm long. Spikelets 5.5–8 mm long, with 4–7 bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved; lower glume 3–3.8 mm long; upper glume 3.6–4 mm long. Web well-developed. Lemma 4–4.7 mm long, with margins broad and membranous, obtuse or truncate or emarginate, 5-nerved, with nerves villous in lower half; intercostal regions puberulous or rarely glabrous. Anthers 2–2.4 mm long.
