Caespitose perennial. Culms 65–100 cm high; mid-culm internodes scabrous in upper half. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves usually with distinct callus at blade-sheath junction on old leaves; basal sheaths with margins connate toward base, glabrous or minutely scabrous, often purplish; ligule 0.4–0.8 (–2) mm long, truncate, apically glabrous or obscurely ciliolate, abaxially puberulous; blade narrowly folded or involute, 15–21 cm long, 0.2–0.5 mm wide, rather soft, adaxially glabrous or papillose, abaxially scabrous, with nerves usually conspicuously raised. Panicles open, (1–) 3–10 (–17) cm long. Spikelets 2.9–6 mm long, with 2–4 (–6) bisexual florets. Glumes narrower than adjacent lemmas, 3-nerved: lower glume 1.5–2.6 mm long; upper glume 1.9–3 mm long. Web absent or rudimentary. Lemma 2–3.5 mm long, 5-nerved, glabrous or with few hairs on midnerve and marginal nerves in lower half. Anthers 1.7–2.2 mm long.
Usually grows in cool, open eucalypt woodland or in mountain forests(to c. 1000 m), often on rocky ground.
