Caespitose, rarely shortly rhizomatous perennial. Culms erect, 45–95 cm high; mid-culm internodes pubescent to pilose with hairs to c. 1 mm long (hairs spreading or retrorse and/or appressed, often of uneven lengths). Young shoots extravaginal and/or intravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins free, indumented as for mid-culm internodes, rarely purplish; ligule 1–1.5 mm long, truncate, apically ciliate, abaxially pubescent; blade flat, channelled or folded, 17–27.5 cm long, 2–3.5 mm wide when flattened or 0.6–1 mm diam. when inrolled, not stiff, adaxially densely puberulous with hairs to c. 0.4 mm long, abaxially puberulous to pubescent with hairs to c. 1 mm long (often mixed with shorter, sometimes appressed hairs), usually greyish. Panicles open to contracted, 11–20.5 cm long. Spikelets 3.8–6.8 mm long, with 3–5 (–8) bisexual florets. Glumes 3-nerved, puberulous; lower glume 1.9–2.6 mm long; upper glume 1.9–3 mm long. Web absent or weakly developed. Lemma 2.2–4 mm long, 5-nerved, puberulous in lower half, often with longer hairs on nerves. Anthers 1.3–2.2 mm long.
