Characteristics

Rhizomatous perennial, producing (often remote) slender leafy tufts, with rhizome internodes sometimes slightly swollen. Culms 5–15 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous, often slightly compressed. Young shoots extravaginal. Leaves: basal sheaths with margins connate for the greater part but soon splitting, glabrous, smooth; ligule 0.9–3.5 mm long, truncate to obtuse or sometimes shallowly lacerate, apically glabrous, abaxially minutely puberulous; blade channelled to closely folded, 4–8 cm long, 0.8–1.2 mm wide, narrowly hooded at apex, stiff, adaxially papillose to puberulous, abaxially glabrous or sometimes minutely scabrous near margins, glaucous. Panicles open, 2–6 cm long. Spikelets 4–7 mm long, with (2–) 3–5 bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 1 or 3-nerved, 1.9–2.7 mm long; upper glume 3 or 5-nerved, 2.1–2.9 mm long. Web absent. Lemma 2.3–3.2 mm long, 5–7-nerved, glabrous. Anthers 1.2–1.6 mm long.
